Vauxhall Station Upgrade is to increase the stations capacity to accommodate an expected 40% rise in passengers in the next few years by increasing accessibility and enabling step-free access.
The work involved the construction of a new lift shaft, and an access adit at the bottom leading to two cross-adits connected to the northbound and southbound Victoria Line platform tunnels. The purpose of the scheme is to provide step-free access between the ticket hall and the station platforms.
All the shaft construction and tunnelling works were re-designed by the main contractor and JGL, to be carried out using SCL techniques which has led to a significant time saving on the overall duration of the scheme. The shaft has an irregular cross-section due to the need to fit in with existing infrastructure which is ideally suited to the flexibility afforded by SCL construction.
