An Overview

Installation of a 150m x 500mm OD SDR11 PE sleeve under the Grand Union Canal in Warwick.  An environmentally sensitive crossing with challenging ground conditions comprising of gravels over very stiff clay and mudstone. The canal crossing formed part of a major network upgrade in and around Warwick for Electricity distribution company Western Power. During the initial feasibility period, JTS were invited to evaluate the crossing and advise on the Best Engineering Solution taking into account dimensions, geology, ecological setting and costs; With the ground conditions showing mainly very firm cohesive material a Directional Drill option was not only the simplest, but also the most cost-effective solution available. The route of the crossing was designed in partnership with JTS to ensure “Build-ability” and also sufficient depth of cover to reduce the risk of drill fluid break-out into the canal. Although it wasn't needed, a Biodegradable drilling fluid was also used during all stages to further minimise the environmental impact. Following some initial re-alignment of the rig due to unforeseen buried services, the full 150m installation (including Pipe Welding) was complete in just over 1 week to the satisfaction of both the Client and the Canals Trust.
