An Overview
The River Humber Gas Pipeline Replacement Project is a £100m design and build contract issued by National Grid to replace the Feeder 9 high pressure gas pipeline under the River Humber. The estuary is of significant environmental importance, classified as SSSI, RAMSAR, SAC and SPA. A 5.4km long, 1050mm diameter gas pipe will bypass the existing pipeline which was installed in 1984.

Joseph Gallagher were engaged to provide labour and plant for installation of the launch pit in Goxhill, which is one of the most significant structures on the project, used for assembling and launching the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and inserting the pipeline into the tunnel.

The launch pit construction sequence consisted of installing; piling mat and piles, the dewatering system, capping and waling beams. Excavating and installing multi-level propping, installing the base slab and final decommission of dewatering and removal of short term propping.
Additionally, we completed the enabling works for the Slurry Treatment Plant (STP) and muck storage areas, headwall installation and set-up of the TBM launch cradle. All of which were completed under a NEC Option A sum-contract.

“The Joseph Gallagher team at Humber Pipeline Tunnel is a credit to the organisation. We have managed to establish a relationship where common goals are put first, and a collaborative environment exists."
