A13 Widening Project

The A13 Road Widening Project is being delivered by Kier on behalf of Thurrock Council. The works include adding an additional lane in both directions between Orsett and Stanford-le-Hope and replacing four bridges.

An Overview
Joseph Gallagher have been contracted by Kier to construct 13 shafts for launching Tunnel Boring Machines that will travel under the A13 installing a road drainage scheme as part of the upgrading works.

We installed 1,400m of 1200 mm diameter jacking pipes using ISEKI Full-Face; remotely – controlled pipe-jacking machinery and laser-controlled steering. The shafts ranged in depth from 5m to 10m with 6m diameters for the Launch Shafts and 4.5m for Reception Shafts. The segmental shafts were constructed using the caisson method.

We worked alongside Kier in developing the tunnelling solution as an alternative to open cut. This approach mitigates the risks associated with deep excavations alongside the existing carriageway where there is the potential to encounter running sands.
