A Game of Crossings

We were delighted to deliver a highly engaging and insightful session at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), bringing our “A Game of Crossings” event to life in collaboration with United Infrastructure Ltd.

The event brought together industry professionals for a dynamic morning of discussion, centred on the challenges and opportunities of delivering complex crossings within major infrastructure programmes. Attendees explored real-world scenarios including stakeholder coordination, constrained environments, design optimisation, and construction delivery across critical infrastructure assets.

Drawing on Joseph Gallagher’s extensive project portfolio, the session highlighted how specialist trenchless techniques and underground engineering solutions are enabling safe and efficient delivery across the energy, water, transport, and environmental sectors.

From microtunnelling and pipejacking to shaft construction and marine outfalls, our experience spans a wide range of challenging environments - from dense urban settings to remote and coastal locations.

Examples discussed reflected the diversity and technical complexity of modern infrastructure delivery, including crossings beneath highways, railways, rivers, and existing utilities - often requiring innovative methods to minimise disruption while maintaining safety and programme certainty. These approaches are central to major schemes such as the HyNet North West project, where multiple trenchless crossings are being delivered along a major pipeline route.

A key theme throughout the session was collaboration. Open dialogue between designers, engineers, contractors, and stakeholders was consistently identified as essential for overcoming technical constraints and achieving successful outcomes on complex projects.

The discussions also reinforced the significance of the Liverpool Bay CO₂ Transportation and Storage (T&S) project and the important role it will play in supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions. Events like these demonstrate the value of knowledge sharing and industry collaboration in tackling the engineering challenges of today - and shaping the infrastructure solutions of tomorrow.
