We are proud to announce a major investment in state-of-the-art trenchless technology, supported by HSBC UK, as part of its ongoing commitment to delivering low-carbon, sustainable infrastructure across the UK.
The new equipment, which includes the Herrenknecht HK750 PT Direct Pipe System, AVN1500 microtunnelling TBM, Mobile Filter Press and 2 no. BM800 Auger Boring rigs, represents an increase in JGL capacity within the UK market. This investment places JGL at the forefront of modern trenchless construction and significantly enhances the Group’s ability to deliver complex underground works with reduced environmental impact. The machinery has been acquired to support major nationally significant infrastructure schemes, including carbon capture and clean energy projects, where minimising surface disruption, carbon emissions and environmental footprint is critical.
This technology enables highly accurate, closed-face tunnelling and pipe installation beneath sensitive assets such as roads, railways, rivers and coastal environments - without the need for open excavation. Compared to traditional methods, the systems offer:
- Reduced carbon emissions
- Lower spoil volumes and waste
- Full recycling of process water
- Minimal noise, vibration and land take
- Improved safety and environmental protection
The investment reflects JGL’s long-term green strategy and its alignment with the UK’s Net Zero ambitions, particularly within energy transition, carbon capture and sustainable water infrastructure.
One of the first projects the equipment will be utilised on is the Liverpool Bay CCS, where JGL have been contracted by United Infrastructure. The project will be instrumental in enabling the landmark HyNet CO₂ pipeline, transporting carbon dioxide from capture plants across the Northwest of England and North Wales through new and repurposed infrastructure to safe and permanent storage in depleted natural gas reservoirs, located under the seabed in Liverpool Bay.
With support from HSBC, this funding demonstrates how financial institutions and engineering specialists can work together to accelerate the delivery of environmentally responsible infrastructure.
Joseph Gallagher continues to invest heavily in innovative plant, digital systems and engineering capability to ensure it remains one of the UK’s most advanced and sustainable underground construction specialists.
