Old Oak Common Station Project Successfully Completed

We are proud to highlight the successful completion of our pipeline works at Old Oak Common Station, delivered on behalf of Expanded- another significant milestone in major UK infrastructure.
Appointed in May 2024, our team was tasked with installing a new track drainage connection from the future HS2 station. The works involved microtunnelling beneath the live Great Western Mainline and connecting into an existing Thames Water manhole located within an operational Hitachi Rail maintenance depot.
Overcoming Complex Engineering Challenges
This project presented a unique set of challenges, including working within a highly constrained and live operational environment, with limited historical data on existing assets. Early surveys revealed that the manhole opening was smaller than anticipated, making the original recovery method for the Micro Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) unfeasible. In response, our team developed an innovative alternative solution, avoiding any structural alterations to the manhole due to its proximity to Network Rail assets and the depot’s main access route.
Innovation Through Planning and Trials
To ensure a safe and effective delivery, the team carried out detailed scale mock-up trials, testing both the original and revised methodologies. These trials allowed for the development of a bespoke solution using abrasive water jet cutting, enabling the MTBM to be safely dismantled and removed in sections through a restricted 600mm opening. This approach required precise planning, coordination, and the creation of a robust Safe System of Work, demonstrating our commitment to safety and engineering excellence.
Successful Delivery
The works were successfully completed in March 2026, delivered on programme and without impact to third-party assets. Operations were carried out 24/7 within a sensitive live environment, with the entire MTBM safely removed as planned. The project’s success was recognised with a monthly safety award from the HS2 Integrated Project Team - reflecting the high standards maintained throughout delivery.
A Team Effort
This achievement is a testament to the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of everyone involved - from site teams and engineers to planners, suppliers, and project partners.
Thank you all for the amazing work - your contribution has made this project a success.
