Ground Improvement and Enabling Works

We deliver enabling works and ground improvement as a critical early phase in the successful delivery of complex infrastructure and building projects. Our approach is engineering-led, integrating geotechnical understanding, constructability and risk management to prepare sites safely, efficiently and predictably for subsequent construction activities. From constrained urban environments to sensitive coastal and brownfield locations, we tailor solutions to suit ground conditions, programme requirements and stakeholder constraints. A core element of our enabling capability is the planning and execution of utility and service diversions, often within congested corridors and live operational environments. We coordinate closely with asset owners and stakeholders to manage interfaces, protect existing infrastructure and maintain continuity of service, while sequencing works to minimise disruption and programme risk.

We place strong emphasis on ground management and contaminated land. Our teams have extensive experience in the assessment, treatment and remediation of contaminated ground, developing strategies that ensure the safe handling, treatment and disposal or reuse of materials in accordance with regulatory requirements. We work closely with environmental consultants and regulators to manage risks to workers, the public and the environment, while enabling construction to progress with confidence.

Our ground improvement capability includes a wide range of specialist techniques, delivered directly or in close collaboration with a trusted specialist supply chain. Methods are selected to address site-specific challenges and include jet grouting, fissure grouting, vibro compaction, soil mixing and temporary ground stabilisation solutions. These techniques are used to improve strength, reduce permeability, control settlement and provide stable platforms for excavation, foundations and underground works. By combining technical design with practical delivery experience, we ensure ground treatments are effective, proportionate and buildable.

Effective communication is fundamental to our enabling works delivery. We recognise that these early activities can be disruptive and proactively engage with local communities and stakeholders to explain works, manage expectations and minimise impacts such as noise, vibration, dust and traffic. Clear communication, supported by robust monitoring and responsive site management, helps maintain trust and reduces the risk of disruption to surrounding areas.

Ecological awareness is embedded throughout our planning and delivery. Environmental constraints are identified at an early stage, with mitigation measures implemented to protect habitats, species and watercourses. This includes careful sequencing of works, defined exclusion zones and close coordination with environmental specialists to ensure compliance with consent conditions while maintaining construction progress.

By combining innovative ground improvement techniques, disciplined environmental management and engineering-led planning, we deliver enabling works that de-risk projects, manage ground uncertainty and create safe, stable platforms for construction, providing confidence from the very start of the project
