Our projects are delivered by a long-standing, highly skilled specialist workforce, which we recognise as one of our greatest assets. We have made sustained investment in building, retaining and developing specialist labour to support complex civil, tunnelling and underground works where experience, judgement and craftsmanship are critical to success.
We employ and deploy hundreds of specialist operatives, including tunnellers, shaft sinkers, SCL nozzlemen, pipejack crews, plant operators, supervisors and engineers, many of whom have progressed through the business over long careers. This depth of experience allows us to deliver safely and efficiently in challenging environments, including live infrastructure, confined spaces and high-risk underground conditions.
As specialist skills across the industry continue to decline, we have taken a proactive and deliberate approach to protecting and growing capability. We invest heavily in training, mentoring and knowledge transfer, ensuring traditional techniques such as hand mining, shaft sinking and sprayed concrete lining are retained alongside modern mechanised and digital methods. Training is delivered through structured programmes, on-the-job development and continuous assessment to maintain competence and consistency.
Our commitment to the future of the industry is reflected in our apprenticeship and early-career programmes, providing clear pathways into specialist construction roles. Apprentices are supported by experienced mentors and exposed to a wide range of disciplines, enabling them to develop into competent, safety-focused operatives and future leaders within the business.
Health, safety and wellbeing are integral to how we invest in our people. We prioritise competence, behavioural safety and occupational health, particularly in high-risk activities such as underground works, pressurised environments and heavy plant operations. This focus ensures our workforce remains resilient, motivated and capable of delivering to the highest standards.
