Specialist Plant and Equipment
We maintain a comprehensive ownership and in-house maintenance capability for specialist plant and equipment, providing a decisive advantage in the delivery of complex civil, tunnelling and underground works. By owning, operating and maintaining critical plant assets, we retain direct control over availability, safety, performance and programme certainty, reducing reliance on third parties and enabling rapid response to changing site conditions.
Our capability includes ownership of a fleet of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), supporting segmental tunnelling across a wide range of diameters and ground conditions. Direct ownership allows us to select, configure and modify TBMs to suit project-specific requirements, including cutterhead design, face support systems, guidance and backup arrangements. This ensures equipment readiness, reliability and optimal performance from launch through to breakthrough and recovery.
We also own and operate a substantial range of craneage, including crawler and specialist lifting equipment, enabling safe handling of heavy tunnel components, segments, formwork systems, caissons and large-diameter pipes. Integrated lifting planning is embedded into our methodologies, supported by experienced lifting teams and known plant capability.
For shaft sinking and deep excavations, we operate telescopic grab excavators and specialist excavation plant, providing precise, controlled excavation in challenging ground conditions and constrained environments. These machines are particularly effective for caisson sinking, deep shafts and confined sites where accuracy, reach and stability are essential.
Our ownership extends to specialist sprayed concrete lining (SCL) equipment, including robotic spraying rigs, high-capacity pumps, dosing systems and control technology. This plant supports high-quality, repeatable SCL application, with enhanced control of thickness, rebound and finish. Combined with trained operators and digital verification tools, our SCL equipment underpins safe, ergonomic and consistent tunnel lining delivery.
We own and operate a wide range of tunnelling and trenchless equipment, supporting microtunnelling, pipejacking and Direct Pipe methodologies. This includes jacking systems, guidance and control equipment, lubrication and grouting plant, ventilation systems and ancillary support equipment, all maintained to known standards and configured for specific project needs.
Our capability also includes hyperbaric and pressurised working equipment, enabling safe execution of compressed air tunnelling and intervention works. This includes decompression chambers, airlocks, pressure control units and life-support systems, all managed under strict certification, inspection and operational controls to support high-risk activities.
All specialist plant is supported by dedicated maintenance, inspection and servicing regimes, delivered through in-house teams and closely managed specialist partners. This ensures compliance with statutory requirements, manufacturer standards and internal assurance processes, while maximising uptime and extending asset life.
