Project Overview
JGL were commissioned by Laing O'Rourke to undertake crucial tunnelling works at Europe's largest sewage works. Laing O'Rourke were awarded the major contract by Thames Water involving the upgrade of the sewage works to cope with London's growing population.
With an experienced team behind the project- our works involved the build of two sheeted pits for launch and reception, microtunnelling works beneath the Northern Outfall Sewer (NOS) along with grouting annulus of the tunnel drive and demobilisation.
Challenges
Although the job was considered quite small in comparison to what we are use to delivering - it did come with a few challenges. The main challenge being tunnelling underneath the NOS with close proximity to the piers supporting the NOS. The line of the drive was crucial to the success of this part of the works and monitored throughout. Daily monitoring was ongoing throughout the drive in collaboration with the main contractor's engineers.
Added Value
- Use of our own Group services to create cost efficiencies for the client - including the use of our tunnelling equipment, TBM, plant and crane hire.
- Excavated material residue from the tunnelling work was re-purposed by the main contractor on site.
- Our design services were used to work up the design of the temporary works which helped ensure our works were delivered to the scope and without incurring delays etc.
