Project Overview

Joseph Gallagher Ltd successfully delivered a storm overflow bypass pipeline at Budds Farm Wastewater Treatment Works, enabling the construction of a new 5,000 m³ storm storage tank for Southern Water. The bypass pipeline was a critical enabling work, allowing the main storm tank construction to proceed without disrupting existing wastewater operations at a live treatment facility.

Our Approach

The project was delivered through careful planning, effective resource deployment, and close coordination with the client and other contractors working on site. Despite the highly constrained working environment and the presence of multiple subcontractors operating simultaneously, the Joseph Gallagher team maintained excellent standards of safety, quality, and environmental performance throughout.

An experienced and professional workforce was assigned to the scheme, ensuring:

  • Safe delivery of all works
  • A positive site presence and strong stakeholder relationships
  • No impact on neighbouring residents, with complaints successfully avoided

All pipeline crossings were completed on programme, without disrupting the works of other contractors or affecting Southern Water’s operational requirements.

Challenges

The project presented several technical and logistical challenges, including:

  • Very restricted working areas within a live treatment works
  • Multiple contractors operating concurrently in close proximity
  • High groundwater levels, influenced by a tidal river
  • Poor site security, increasing exposure to theft
  • High staff turnover, requiring careful management to maintain continuity

These challenges were successfully mitigated through strong site leadership, clear communication, and collaborative working practices.
