Project Overview

One of the Group's flagship projects showcasing our HDD capabilities. JGL were commissioned to help support Jones Bros with the installation of the HVDC cable ducting system by undertaking a series of Horizontal Directional Drills in preparation for the install.

This forms the integral cable work onshore to drive future transmission of renewable energy from the world's largest offshore wind farm to UK homes and businesses.

Challenges

The soft ground conditions including sand, clay, gravel and peat proved to be quite a challenge for the team. To accommodate this, we purchased a bespoke Dupagro De-sander system for the soils we will encounter, and we changed to the tooling and the HDD drilling slurry to a CEBO product, OCMA.

The project required careful planning and logistics, as the crossings ran under road, rail, river and through Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) areas. With this in mind, we worked with our design team to design each crossing with these factors in mind, mitigating any risks and using environmentally friendly materials throughout the project.

This has been a fantastic project to work on over the past two years. Our team have been instrumental throughout, operating four horizontal directional drilling rigs simultaneously during peak times, installing an impressive 27km of duct in 140 drills – ranging from 50m to 620m and then returning to grout the cables after the install. It’s been a true collaborative effort working with Jones Bros throughout the project. The team’s work ethic shone through helping to deliver the project to programme and with safety at the forefront - something we are very proud to have been part of.

Added Value

A real benefit to the client has been the exceptional collaboration from the offset. Supporting from the tendering stage of the project really added value and reassurance for delivering the project at the highest of standards.

Utilising our Group services and assets enhanced productivity and operational safety benefits to the project.

Our design team based in Leeds were involved early with both temporary and permanent design works with our Group subsidiary NRC Plant, providing excavators.

Our award-winning LIFE safety culture was been embedded on the project from day one, along with our Prevention Not Correction initiative. To date no safety or non-conformance issues were reported.
