Project Overview

At Joseph Gallagher Ltd, we are delivering a key milestone on the Sheikh Isa Bin Salman (SIBS) Trunk Sewer Project in Bahrain, with the completion of a further microtunnel breakthrough marking the end of the project’s fifth drive. This latest section involves installing a DN1600 pipeline using a Herrenknecht AVN1600 slurry microtunnelling machine, and has been completed ahead of schedule with consistently high construction quality and an excellent safety record.

The Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Trunk Sewer Project is being delivered as a multi‑drive programme, comprising microtunnel sections of varying diameters across the overall alignment.

The full SIBS scheme comprises approximately 8.6km of microtunnelling, with tunnel diameters ranging from DN1200 to DN1800. To achieve the client’s programme objectives, our team has deployed five microtunnelling machines operating across multiple drives simultaneously.

The project builds on our previous success in Bahrain, following the delivery of the Zinj Trunk Sewer (ZTS) for the same client. Works are being carried out in close collaboration with Haji Hassan Group (HHG), the client, and Stantec Khonji, acting as project consultant. All activities are undertaken under the diligent supervision of the Ministry of Works (SEPPD).

Challenges

The SIBS project presents several significant engineering and logistical challenges.
Ground conditions across the alignment are complex, requiring close attention to soil transitions and variations in face pressures. High groundwater levels demand robust control measures throughout excavation. Shaft locations must be carefully planned to avoid extensive buried utilities, requiring coordination with multiple stakeholders.

One of the most technically demanding elements is the delivery of a 778m long DN1800 microtunnel drive. Due to the length and the need for absolute accuracy, the excavation requires a gyroscopic guidance system to maintain precise alignment throughout. This ensures the pipeline meets all hydraulic and geometric requirements, despite challenging subsurface conditions.

Delivery Approach

To maintain progress across all drives, we are adopting a collaborative and coordinated delivery strategy with HHG, Stantec Khonji, and SEPPD. The use of five machines operating simultaneously allows us to meet the client’s programme requirements while ensuring safe and controlled working practices.

Each drive is executed using slurry microtunnelling techniques to manage variable ground conditions, support the face, and control groundwater. The guidance system ensures accurate, long‑distance drives, particularly on the DN1800 drive, where precision is paramount. Our teams maintain consistent quality standards and ensure smooth interface management between drives, shafts, and stakeholder requirements.

Outcome

Through close coordination, technical expertise, and disciplined site controls, the works are being delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high engineering standard. The delivery of all five drives, including the challenging 778m DN1800 section, demonstrates our capability to execute large‑scale, technically complex microtunnelling projects in demanding international environments.

The project continues to strengthen JGL’s reputation in the Middle East and showcases our ability to manage complex ground conditions, maintain programme certainty, and deliver high‑quality trenchless solutions for major wastewater infrastructure schemes.
