Project Description

The Tideway Project delivered a 25km tunnel system designed to intercept sewage outfalls along the River Thames. The scheme significantly increases London’s sewage capacity to support future population growth and improves overall river water quality.

The project was divided into three sections: West, Central, and East. The East section - managed by the Costain-Vinci-Bachy (CVB) Joint Venture - comprised:

  • 5.5km of main tunnel works (7.8m diameter)
  • 4.6km of the Greenwich Connection Tunnel
  • Construction using Mixshield slurry Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)
  • Five large diaphragm-wall shafts (17–25m diameter)
  • Numerous connecting structures interfacing with existing sewage assets

Joseph Gallagher Ltd Role

Joseph Gallagher provided, as part of the CVB delivery team a range of services from undertaking studies, developing complex construction methodologies, and providing resources for construction production, engineering management, third party interfaces and asset management and fire safety services. This included:

  • Pre-construction Planning & Methodologies:
Joseph Gallagher developed strategies for river transport facilities, coordinated Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) delivery by barge, assessed secondary lining works and machinery, and planned SCL launch adits.
  • Construction Production Management & Supervision:
Joseph Gallagher staff supported the management of tunnelling operations, managed complex activities such as atmospheric head interventions, mid-tunnel crossings, and slurry booster pumps, and supervised TBM launches and removals.
  • Design and Engineering Management:
They collaborated with principal designer Mott MacDonald for permanent works and coordinated temporary works at key sites, including Greenwich Pump Station and Chambers Wharf.
  • Temporary Works Management & Coordination:
Ensured safe execution of temporary works, including bespoke solutions for TBM launches and removals.
  • 3rd Party Interface Management:
Managed interfaces with third parties and provided expertise for asset protection and settlement deeds.
  • Fire Safety Management:
Supported fire safety planning and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Highlights

  • Undertook a study to increase the use of river transport for the project.
  • Supporting the planning of the fully assembled TBM shield delivery using a 3,000t payload capacity jack-up barge. The delivery involved the use of self-propelled modular transporters and a bespoke cantilever bridge to offload the TBM at Chambers Wharf.
  • Supported the planning and delivery of complex construction activities including arrangements for the short mode launch of TBM Selina using a bespoke slurry umbilical temporary works solution. All TBM gantries were delivered via the river and assembled prior to lowering into the shaft performing tandem lifts with overhead gantry cranes.
  • Supported the considerations and development of the specialised mechanical secondary-lining machine.
  • Successful third party and asset management work that kept approvals ahead of construction.
