Project Description
The Tideway Project delivered a 25km tunnel system designed to intercept sewage outfalls along the River Thames. The scheme significantly increases London’s sewage capacity to support future population growth and improves overall river water quality.
The project was divided into three sections: West, Central, and East. The East section - managed by the Costain-Vinci-Bachy (CVB) Joint Venture - comprised:
- 5.5km of main tunnel works (7.8m diameter)
- 4.6km of the Greenwich Connection Tunnel
- Construction using Mixshield slurry Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)
- Five large diaphragm-wall shafts (17–25m diameter)
- Numerous connecting structures interfacing with existing sewage assets
