Joseph Gallagher successfully delivered a new 1,845m³ buried storm water storage tank at Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works for CMDP JV and Southern Water. The project included the construction of a new shaft, weir chamber, associated pipework and supporting infrastructure to enhance the site's stormwater management capacity.

The Challenge

During construction, groundwater levels were found to be significantly higher than anticipated, creating challenges for the planned shaft sinking methodology. The team also had to work safely around existing high-voltage cables and redesign the shaft location after the discovery of a medium-pressure gas main.

Our Solution

Working collaboratively with the client and project partners, Joseph Gallagher redesigned the shaft construction approach, enabling the structure to be built as a dry caisson while maintaining the required storage capacity. The team also developed practical solutions to manage existing utilities, ensuring works progressed safely and efficiently with minimal impact on programme delivery.
