Project Overview

Joseph Gallagher was appointed to support the delivery of a key infrastructure scheme along Atlas Road in London.

Working alongside main contractor Clancy Docwra for UK Power Networks, the project involved the installation of utility pipelines beneath a busy road using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) techniques.

The use of trenchless technology enabled the works to be carried out with minimal disruption to traffic, local residents, and existing infrastructure, making it an ideal solution for this highly congested urban location.

Challenges and Solutions

Ground conditions across the site were dominated by London Clay, presenting a demanding environment for HDD operations. These conditions required:

  • Enhanced monitoring and control of drilling accuracy
  • Additional maintenance of specialist equipment
  • Close collaboration with the client to optimise delivery methods

Through careful planning and technical expertise, the team successfully maintained precision and performance throughout the drilling process.

Scope of Works

The project scope comprised:

  • Delivery of two HDD crossings beneath Atlas Road
  • Installation of multiple utility pipelines to support essential services
  • Execution of precision drilling operations in constrained conditions
  • Management and removal of drilling by-products, including slurry

The completed works covered a total drive length of 408m, including:

  • Bore 1: 250mm and 110mm pipelines
  • Bore 2: Two 250mm pipelines and two 110mm pipelines

Outcome

The Atlas Road scheme demonstrates the effectiveness of Horizontal Directional Drilling in delivering critical utility infrastructure within urban environments.

By combining technical expertise, specialist equipment, and a collaborative approach, Joseph Gallagher successfully completed the installation while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding area.
