Project Overview
Joseph Gallagher were contracted to deliver the enabling works and road works package for a new residential development in Bishops Stortford. The package comprised of detailed design (based on a novation agreement), phased construction delivery and the preparation of a 13-acre brownfield site within Phase 1 of the development.
The design for the works was novated by the main contractor to Joseph Gallagher who were then responsible for completing the final design and implementing the utility diversions.
Challenges
Working within a live railway station car park environment was one of our biggest challenges. We however made it work the robust measures we had in place to ensure that safety remained uncompromised across the site at all times. Detailed traffic management plans, clear pedestrian signage/communications and daily site briefings helped the team immensely with managing both public safety and vehicle traffic whilst carrying out critical works.
Preparing the 13-acre brownfield site was by no means an easy feat as the land itself was home to a number of nesting birds and protected species. Ecologists were employed to survey and monitor the area before works commenced to ensure all habitat and species were protected and re-homed where necessary. This was communicated to the community to reassure active groups. In addition to the scrub and hypodermic needle clearance prior to the main earthworks, pre-screening of material and W.A.C testing for contaminants was also completed during the bulk excavation. All contaminated material was segregated for disposal responsibly to a licensed waste contractor. Where possible, excavated spoil was removed and treated on site to reduce our carbon footprint.
