Project Overview
An under road crossing pipeline passing under one of the busiest motorway routes in the South was the job that JGL were asked to deliver. The pipeline was to connect an EON Energy Centre to a new residential District Heating Network serving thousands of new homes and businesses on the Monkerton Development.
Challenges
The URX crossing was through a weak to strong sandstone and mudstone layer - however this was handled without to much difficulty thanks to a highly experienced JGL team.
After mobilising to site and constructing the drive pit and reception shaft, the team were exposed to very hard sandstone in the reception shaft and base of the tunnel horizon. This raised concern on the proposed TBM's suitability - JGL proposed an alternative stronger TBM more suited to the existing ground conditions, which was agreed by the main contractor and deployed successfully by the team.
Other challenges faced on this project included: inserting heat transfer pipes in 12m product lengths in a restricted conditions (pipe and environment), remote settlement - which was monitored daily by JGL in order to fulfil the prerequisite by National Highways as part of the crossing works.
Added Value
Utilising our Group services and the industry's best tunnelling operatives - we were able to put forward better solutions to tackle the challenging ground conditions in minimal time whilst also having rapid access to in-house equipment and services. This not only offered great value to the client but most critically, it did not impact on programme.
URX M5 Crossing design, application process and management with National Highways and the local authority was supported by JGL's design team, which was instrumental to the success of this project.
All excavation and tunnelling materials remained on site and re-purposed by the main contractor to help minimise waste levels and reduce the project's carbon footprint. Imported materials were also used on other aspects of the project to keep waste levels to a minimum.
